Searchable Content

Feb 15, 2012 at 3:06 PM by CJ Jelinek

However, now you may also add a search box that searches the publicly available content of the pages of your site. Note, this functionality is automatically included in the database search by default--no further action is needed. If you would like a search box added to your site, just contact us.

Coupon Codes Via a Link

Feb 8, 2012 at 10:59 AM by CJ Jelinek

Our platform has had for quite some time the ability to enter coupon codes in the shopping cart for a discount on orders. However, you now have the ability to offer coupon codes via a link. Once a customer clicks on the link (ex, http://www.yourdomain.com/?coupon=holidays2012), the coupon code will automatically be recorded regardless of the landing page. And once the customer makes his or her way to the cart, the discount will already be applied. To start using this new feature, set up a cou...

Bulk Price Changes (reductions, increases, sales)

Jan 24, 2012 at 1:18 PM by CJ Jelinek

bulk price changeProduct prices (regular and sale) can now be mass-updated in the database. You can either increase or decrease by a specified percentage. Even better, multiple products can be instantly put on sale by applying a mass percentage discount to the original price, which appears in the sale price field. Then click the column header for either the p...

Hide form field labels

Sep 26, 2011 at 3:47 PM by CJ Jelinek

hide field labels
Sometimes you need a form on your site, but don't have much room to fit both the field labels and the text fields. In those situations, you can combine them into one. The result is the text field with the label within. And when clicked upon, the label disappears. To convert fields to this new feature, go to "manage sites" => "edit forms" => "edit fields". From there, edit an existing field and click the checkbox that says "show label in text box". Note, this feature is only available for drop...

Popup window Lightbox

Sep 26, 2011 at 3:44 PM by CJ Jelinek

popup window lightboxIn addition to being able to turn any page of the website into a popup window that opens in a new window or tab, you now have the option of opening the window in a lightbox. When the page link is clicked, the page grays out and a window displays in the middle of the page with the content. The advantage is that it doesn't open in a separate window/tab, so it won't be blocked by popup blockers. Great uses for this are lead generation forms, terms of services, privacy policies, etc. To use the n...

CSS and JavaScript file caching

Sep 12, 2011 at 3:16 PM by CJ Jelinek

Along the same lines as page caching that already exists in the platform, all external CSS and JavaScript files are combined into single files, compressed, and cached on the web server. All of these actions result in even faster page load times. It may not seem like it, but it could potentially shave seconds off the load time.

Strip MS Word Formatting

Aug 31, 2011 at 11:43 AM by CJ Jelinek

When you copy content from a Word document and paste it into the content editor, all formatting is preserved. You might think that's a good thing, but in reality, it leads to inconsistent formatting with the rest of your site. For example, the font choice, size and color will display exactly as it is in the Word doc, which likely isn't going to be the same styles that your site uses. To address this problem, a new "Strip MS Word Formatting" button is in the content editor. Click on this icon ...

Search-Engine-Friendly URL's

Aug 30, 2011 at 4:04 PM by CJ Jelinek

This was probably the most-requested feature that I heard from my clients over the years. It went something like this...

Client:
"We would like a URL similar to http://www.mydomain.com/campaign-2011/".

To which I would reply:
"Well, the best I can do is http://www.mydomain.com/?p=campaign-2011".

It's not a big deal if the client is emailing the link. But it's not exactly easy to print it out on a postcard and expect their customers to type it in correctly in their browser.

Problem solved. I have fi...

You will find this new functionality in "manage sites" => "configure contact info".

Code Blocks

Jul 19, 2011 at 3:07 PM by CJ Jelinek

code blocksA code block can contain any kind of HTML, including text, images, JavaScript, iframes, flash objects, etc. Although you can easily edit the HTML of your pages by clicking the "click to EDIT HTML" button in editMode, sometimes it's easier to use a placeholder for a more complicated or repetitive block of code. Quicker Page Loading

Jul 13, 2011 at 9:37 PM by CJ Jelinek

page cachingI have dramatically decreased page load times by developing a concept similar to what your browser does to speed up page loading--page caching. Basically, as long as nothing has changed with a page's content, a cached version will be displayed if it exists and is current. If no cache exists or if it is outdated, a new version will be generated, cached, and displayed. The difference in speed is due to the fact that a cached page uses far fewer server resources compared to dynamically generatin...

Social Media Badges

social media badgesThe Small Business Platform has a new database field type which allows for the dynamic display of social media badges, leading to their respective profile pages when clicked. For example, you could display social media badges on a members page next to each member. To add to your site, create a new "Social Media Badges" field for your database table, then add it to a database view. Feel free to reach out if you need guidance.

Blog Categories (Tags)

Sep 8, 2010 at 3:46 PM by CJ Jelinek

This allows you to categorize your articles and gives your readers a way to filter articles by clicking on a category link. You'll find them on the right hand column under the blog archives. To add/edit categories, simply click on "blogs" in the control panel and click the edit button. You'll notice a new field for the categories toward the bottom of the page.

Using Incoming Links to Boost Search Rankings

Feb 27, 2010 at 10:47 AM by CJ Jelinek

The more popular your website is, the better it does in organic search rankings. One way search engines determine your site's popularity is to look at all the sites that link to it, and their popularity as well. The thinking goes like this. If a well-known site has a link to your site then your site must be special, so your site will gain credibility as a result. It's kind of like hanging out with the "in" crowd in high school. Unfortunately, search engines care more about the popular quarter...

How to Create an Effective Link Using Anchor Text

Feb 27, 2010 at 10:46 AM by CJ Jelinek

When most people think of a link, they usually imagine a clickable web address like http://www.jellysites.com. However, what people often overlook are the links that contain words like "click here" or "affordable small business websites". The truth is, there are two parts to a link--where the link goes when clicked (ie the action), and what text is displayed to the user (ie anchor text). The anchor text is what you see and the action (or link) is behind the scenes and is embedded in the HTML ...

Gain Social Media Followers by Sweetening the Deal

Jan 28, 2010 at 6:14 AM by CJ Jelinek

People have asked me how they can increase their fans and followers on their social media accounts. After all, your tweets and posts mean nothing if nobody sees them.

I recently received an e-newsletter from a Chicagoland salon and spa that offered a discount in exchange for becoming their fan on Facebook. The offer was for $10 off any service. In addition, the first 20 people would be entered into a raffle for a very nice spa package that they offered. This is a great idea for two reasons...

Using Twitter to Increase Traffic to Your Website

Jan 28, 2010 at 6:13 AM by CJ Jelinek

The first question that everybody asks when they first create a Twitter account is "what should I tweet about"? The second question is usually "is anybody actually reading this"? But the question that should be asked is "how can this benefit my business"?

One of the best uses of Twitter (with regards to gaining traffic to your website) is the inclusion of links. Search engines love reciprocal links which is defined as having a link on your website to a site that also has a link back to you...

Not all URL shortening services are the same

Jan 16, 2010 at 10:36 AM by CJ Jelinek

URL shortening services perform a very basic function--they redirect a short URL to a long one. That's all there is to it. However, did you know there's more than one way to do a redirect? And depending on which kind is used, it will determine if the link equity is transferred to the destination URL. Did you hear that? If not done properly, your site will not get any credit for the link you posted. In other words, it's all for nothing and you just wasted a perfectly good post.

In the time it takes to drink a cup of coffee, you've caught up on news, weather, sports and perhaps the latest trends in your industry. Well, RSS allo...
